Dr. Libby offers couples counseling and marriage counseling for those who are married. He strives to enhance communication and relationship skills, as well as ways to solve conflicts. Dr. Libby could not solve some sexual problems without addressing the relationship/marital issues that contribute to these concerns. His approach is to see each person separately first, and then together. This provides him the information he needs to develop a sound treatment plan and to solve relationship problems fairly quickly.
He uses Dr. John Gottman's books to assign homework and to fully address relationship problems. Unlike many pop psychology approaches (such as John Gray, Men are from Mars, Women Are from Venus), Gottman's approach is based on good research, and is not a theory without empirical support. Dr. Libby assigns exercises, intimate conversations at home, dating and discovering new interests together.
Dr. Libby sees couples regardless of whether there are sexual problems. His treatment plan usually includes cognitive/behavioral therapy along with John Gottman's works.
Marriage counselors are trained to deal with marital issues such as communication breakdowns, money differences, and how to deal with arguments and avoid divorce. Dr. Libby does all of this, and he helps some through the divorce process, helping them adjust to being single again.
